Ulin is the most extraordinary woods endemic to only a few places in Southeast Asia. It is the most durable of ironwoods and has been used for centuries in all types of construction as it is one of the few species that can withstand the rigors of a tropical environment. It is used for structures, docks, ships and housing for hundreds of years because of its everlasting strength and durability. A dense timber that sinks when placed in water, this timber is recommended for projects with high humidity like on seashores. Indigenous to Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, the durability of Ulin timber, its color and grain pattern makes it prized in the region it grows. The most common test for testing wood hardness is known as the Janka hardness test. The hardness and durability of the lumber varies from the different regions they are from. Highly prized for many outdoor uses as it offers a natural resistance to rot, decay, termites, bacterial, fungal, weathering, insects and marine borer attacks.

The janka hardness reaches 1000 – 1300, 7.620N and has a bending strength of more than 1100 kg/m3 and a pressure strength of more than 650 kg/m3. Its density is around 900 – 1100 kg/m3, just enough for real life usage and it is termite proof naturally since it is so hard to chew through.
