Onyx
Onyx is made of layered bands of translucent minerals which is banded calcite. Beautiful and rare, this natural stone looks like sheets of colored glass. A translucent stone that comes in a huge array of colors, it produces some of the most distinct patterns and textures available in natural stone.

The advantages of onyx lay truly in its beauty with each slab varying dramatically in its color and veining making them quite a work of art.

Soft, brittle and fragile compared to other stones, it makes it a difficult stone to remove from the earth. As the makeup of the stone is rarer than others, and is of a semi-precious variety, working with this type of fragile stone is more difficult and challenging as it often breaks compared to other materials. As this is a softer stone it is not a great stone to use in a high traffic kitchen or other areas if the area is intended for practical use often. It is on the other hand a perfect decorative stone for bars, shelves, countertops or as a feature wall in a living space or bathroom.

The highlight of this beauty is the transparency of the stone which transmits light extremely well throughout. Being able to do that, the stone slab needs to be thin but when backlit it glows with luminescence. The underlighting that can be installed with the countertop or bar illuminates the different colors in the stone making it a standout material.
